A Little Chinese Goes a Long Way

Before you came to Hong Kong you might have been dazzled by the lights and all that talk of Hong Kong as “Asia’s World City”, and it sure is, but as a student you might well find yourself spending a lot of time in the less “international” parts of Hong Kong where English isn’t going to get you very far. However, Mandarin Chinese, as a language understood by all in Hong Kong and internationally useful as business tool, will take you much further. In this article I will provide you with some of the best free sources for learning Mandarin Chinese.

1. Podcasts for “on the go” learning – https://www.chineseclass101.com/. These excellent audio lessons will take you from beginner to fluent. Spend an hour or two every day and you’ll be amazed by your progress.

2. TV shows for learning: Happy Chinese 中文快乐https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=svdnzVJ9KA4&list=PLdT5MUO4gYEdQBMFtkF5g803FJZOss-ip. This fun TV show will make learning Mandarin a blast. Check it out for entertaining beginner level learning.

3. Pleco Chinese Dictionary – Available on all Apple and Google app stores. A useful bilingual dictionary which every learner of Chinese should have in their pocket

4. HelloChinese Application – Available on Apple and Google app stores. This little app is similar to DuoLingo and will give you a helpful and fun introduction to Mandarin Chinese

Through combining all these different tools, you will pick up a lot of Mandarin Chinese in a short time making your stay in Hong Kong so much more enjoyable!
